LINC And ESL In Canada: Which Option Is Right For You?
PathCAN Academy
Being proficient in English is the most important “key” to integrating into life in the Maple Leaf country. In Canada, the two most common programs are LINC and ESL. Although both teach English, their target participants and purposes are quite different. Let’s explore with PathCAN!
1. LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada)
LINC is a language program specifically designed for newcomers and is fully funded by the federal government.
Eligibility: Only for Permanent Residents (PR) or Protected Persons (Refugees). (Tourists and international students are not eligible.)
Course Content: Beyond grammar, LINC focuses on survival and integration skills. You will learn how to visit a doctor, rent a home, understand Canadian laws, culture, and the banking system.
Tuition: Completely free.
Additional Benefits: Many LINC centers offer free childcare services (Care for Newcomer Children) and transportation support (bus tickets) for students.
Certification: LINC results are recognized as language proof when applying for Canadian citizenship.
2. ESL (English as a Second Language)
ESL is a general term for English classes offered by school boards or private language centers.
Eligibility: Open to everyone, including PR holders, international students, foreign workers (Work Permit holders), and even tourists.
Course Content: More academic or general communication–focused. ESL helps prepare you for college or university studies or for exams such as IELTS or CELPIP.
Tuition: May be free or low-cost for PRs/Citizens depending on the province, but usually requires tuition fees for temporary visa holders.
Additional Benefits: Typically does not include childcare services like LINC.
Depending on your needs and immigration status, you can choose the program that best suits you and your family.
