Opening Your First Credit Card In Canada: Don’t Miss These 4 Important Tips!
PathCAN Academy
For newcomers, your first credit card is the "key" to building your credit score. To get off to a good start, keep these 4 important tips in mind:
• 1. Choose the "Newcomers" package: Major banks (RBC, TD, Scotiabank, etc.) often offer special deals to open credit cards without requiring a credit history for newcomers.
• 2. Secured Credit Card: If you don’t qualify for a regular credit card, opt for a secured card to start building your credit score immediately.
• 3. The 30% Rule: Always spend less than 30% of your credit limit (e.g., for a $1,000 card, spend no more than $300) to see the fastest growth in your credit score.
• 4. Always pay on time: Make sure to pay your balance on the due date. Even one day late can negatively affect your financial record. Set up "Auto-pay" from your checking account to your credit card to never miss a payment deadline.
Setting up a solid financial foundation is the first step toward settling down and building a career in the land of maple leaves.
