Shopping In Canada: How To Avoid “Hurting Your Wallet”?
PathCAN Academy
1. Memorize the “Supermarket Map” 🛒
Not all grocery stores are the same. Choose the right place depending on your family’s needs:
• Discount Stores: No Frills, Walmart, FreshCo, Food Basics.
These offer some of the lowest prices for groceries and everyday household items.
• Wholesale Store: Costco.
Extremely cost-effective for large families—but be careful, it’s easy to overspend here.
• Budget Household Items: Dollarama.
Everything ranges from $1–$5, from kitchenware and stationery to decorations.
2. Use the “Flipp” App
• Flipp compiles all weekly flyers from supermarkets in your area.
• Compare prices for eggs, milk, and meat before heading out to see which store offers the best deals that week.
3. Prioritize Store Brands
Instead of buying major brands, choose the store’s own private label (for example: Great Value from Walmart; No Name or President’s Choice from Loblaws/No Frills).
The quality is often comparable, but prices are usually 20%–40% cheaper since they don’t carry heavy advertising costs.
4. Watch for Special Discount Tags
• Price Match: Some supermarkets (such as No Frills and FreshCo) allow you to match a competitor’s lower price if you show proof (for example, a screenshot from the Flipp app).
• Near-Expiry Discounts (30%–50% off): Items with red or yellow stickers are usually fresh products that must be sold the same day. If you plan to cook immediately, these can be amazing deals!
5. Membership Cards & Reward Points
Most major chains offer free membership programs:
• PC Optimum: Usable at No Frills, Real Canadian Superstore, and Shoppers Drug Mart. Earn points and redeem them directly for discounts on your bill.
• Scene+: Accepted at FreshCo, Safeway, and Sobeys.
Hopefully, these tips will help you save a significant amount on your shopping expenses in Canada!
