Interested in Being a Paramedic? Begin a Rewarding and Highly Valued Career with Fanshawe College
Check out this article for program structure, career path, and job prospects of the Fanshawe College's Paramedic Program.
Compared to some other occupations, the role of a paramedic is always essential and rewarding. However, it also can be incredibly challenging in some cases. When a patient’s life is at stake, the first aid given by paramedics is a matter of life and death. No doubt, working as a Paramedic requires a thorough understanding and a long-term study of anatomy, crisis prevention, patient care, and ambulance operations. But more importantly, being a paramedic requires practical experience that goes beyond the theories.
Thanks to the well-designed program structure, Fanshawe College’s Paramedic program provides students with a combination of in-class learning and hands-on training. Fanshawe's Paramedic program is accredited by the Canadian Medical Association and is recognized as a Canadian Forces accredited program. Unlike some regular paramedic courses, the simulated training provided by Fanshawe’s Simulation Labs places students in a vivid environment by resembling a real clinical or community environment. Fanshawe's own ambulance is used, while realistic mannequins serve as patients during the simulation.
As one of the highly competitive programs in Fanshawe College, the number of qualified applicants far exceeds the program’s available seats. Despite the demand, the program maintains its limited class size to provide high-quality teaching and an engaging learning environment. The full-time internship and post-study qualifications offered by Fanshawe are also popular among students. During the final semester of the program, students will be involved in a full-time internship with a practicing paramedic. This provides an opportunity for students to engage in practical patients’ treatment with local emergency service providers and get ready to work as a paramedic in emergency response service, industrial first aid, and medical departments.
After graduating from Fanshawe’s Paramedic program, students are eligible to write the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care Advanced Emergency Medical Assistant exam (AEMCA). Moreover, Fanshawe’s Paramedic program meets all Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU) program standards. Fanshawe graduates are also qualified for base hospital certification and employment as a paramedic in the province of Ontario.
For students who want to dig deep into the paramedic profession, Fanshawe also offers an Advanced Care Paramedic program. This program aims to level up students’ already impressive skill set by teaching them how to better manage life-threatening emergencies and be an experienced first-responder who patients can count on. Fanshawe is dedicated to offering a highly specialized and dynamic education and training for students to be on the front line of medical care.
