Your Education Wherever and Whenever – TRU Open Learning

Your learning made for your needs with TRU's Open Learning.

The fundamental idea of online learning is that a classroom can be almost anywhere. Numerous schools have explored and offered online learning as personal computers have become more available and accessible. Whether you need to study part or full-time, Thompson Rivers University’s (TRU’s) renowned Online Learning is available to provide you a top-notch education.

In recognizing the variety of learning styles, lifestyles, and commitments that exist for students, Open Learning focuses on open, accessible, and flexible learning convenient to the learner. TRU found that for the 2019-2020 academic year, nearly half of the 30,000 enrolled students were either studying through Open Learning, or a combination of Open Learning and on-campus studying. Enrolment is continuous, and an open admission policy ensures availability for you whether you are beginning your journey of furthering your education or are already a post-secondary student at another institution. You can choose between self-paced courses or paced courses. Self-paced programs must be completed within 30-weeks but at the student’s preferred pace, whereas paced courses specify start and end dates for courses or programs. With the open admission policy, specific grade point averages (GPAs) are not required when applying for any course registrations or admissions into credential programs. As of the 2020 fall semester, there are approximately 550 transferable courses and more than 60 programs available for students.

Additional credits can be earned through TRU’s Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) and through transfer credits. With these systems, academic credits can be awarded on a case-by-case basis if you have obtained valuable previous knowledge, life skills, and/or work experience. Most credits earned from other educational institutions can be transferred into TRU credentials for your courses or programs. Beyond accelerating your program, earning additional credits through these systems can help you save money on tuition. Fees and availability of services can differ depending on your classification as an international student or as a resident outside of British Columbia. Some courses and programs will cost more than others too.

The onset of COVID-19 saw schools across the world closing entirely or allowing limited access for students to attend classes in-person. A survey done by Statistics Canada observed that up-to 75% of respondents (Canadian post-secondary students) had all of their courses moved online. In response, TRU adjusted its Open Learning system to become the first in North America to offer an international credential transfer. With this, students from around the world can study micro-courses and compile them to get university credits from institutions. The courses available are all based on open educational resources, which eliminates the need for textbooks and other traditional materials.

Your learning can be done at your own pace. TRU’s Open Learning system is available for you to start or further your education, or help you work towards your dream career. Global Study Guide is also here to help you with your education. Register your free student account today to learn more.
